Loblolly Pine Breeding Strategy

We manage the loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) breeding population that supports the reforestation of more than 1 million acres (0.4 million hectares) annually. Our program is responsible for balancing short-term gain and coancestry to ensure that long-term gain is not compromised. This allows our full members to focus on producing elite material for landowners.

In the fifth cycle, a recurrent genomic selection strategy is being implemented that incorporates optimum contributions.

Breeding logistics are coordinated between full members and Tree Improvement Program staff at the Arrowhead Breeding Center hosted by the Georgia Forestry Commission.
